What is a Brain Dump?
A brain dump is where you try to get all of the things that you are thinking about out of your head and onto paper or laptop or even audio. There is no wrong way to do a brain dump. Use the tool that works best for you.
Why should you do a Brain Dump?
The reason why you want to do a brain dump is because you may notice that as you are working on certain things, ideas just keeping popping back into your head. Sometimes it’s the same ideas, sometimes it could be new ideas. The problem is that it becomes a distraction when you are tying to focus.
A brain dump allows you to put the ideas into a place where you can always go back to it. It’s almost like a away of telling your brain that you’re not going to forget about the idea so you put it somewhere almost tangible that you can go back to. That way it doesn’t have to keep popping back up in your idea for fear that you may forget the brilliant ideas. Because they are all brilliant ideas, right?
Quick Steps to a Full Brain Dump
- Schedule time to complete your brain dump
- Determine where you will dump the ideas
- Physical Notebook
- Online Word Processor (e.g., Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Evernote)
- Online PM Tool – Trello or Asana
- Mobile Voice Recorder
- At your scheduled time, get all of the ideas out of your head and into your chosen ideas place
- Highlight those ideas that align with where you currently are in business
- Schedule more time to flesh out the important ideas
